Specialist Assessment

Children with developmental delays or disabilities often present with complex developmental needs. A comprehensive professional assessment of  your child's needs can assist you, as parents, to make sound decisions about therapy and intervention support for your child. Specialist assessment of particular areas of development can form the basis of a therapy plan designed to achieve the best outcomes, that maximise your child's potential.

Child and Youth Services offers a range of specialist assessments, undertaken by skilled and experienced therapists from a range of professional backgrounds including Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Developmental Education, Physiotherapy and Social Work.

Specialist Assessments can include:

  • Developmental assessment – a comprehensive assessment of the key areas of development- Communication, social skills, physical skills, cognitive skills, daily living skills and emotional development.
  • Behavioural assessment – an assessment that aims to identify developmental, environmental, biological, sensory or social factors that may be linked to the behaviours of concern, and includes development of positive intervention strategies.
  • Communication assessment - an assessment of the child's understanding of language and communication skills, along with ideas for augmentative communication and assistive technology.
  • Eating and Drinking – assessment of complex feeding concerns that may involve medical, sensory or behavioural issues, and development of Oral Eating and Drinking Care Plans where needed.
  • Sleeping – a detailed assessment of Sleeping difficulties to enable an individualised Sleep program to be developed.
  • Toilet training – a specialist assessment that provides information on the child's readiness for toilet training, and factors to be addressed when the child has long term difficulties with toileting.
  • Psychological assessment - an assessment by a psychologist can provide formal assessment of intellectual ability, or assessment of emotional, behavioural or mental health issues.
  • Family relationships - an assessment of family relationships or concerns including relationships between the child with disability, siblings and parents to assist the family to identify the type of support or therapy that would be beneficial.
  • Detailed assessment of specific developmental areas such as sensory assessment, social- emotional assessment, physical skills can also be provided.
